Jafet Santos-Maldonado

Jafet Santos Maldonado is an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Crop Protection with a minor in Writing and Communication. Growing up on the southern coast, surrounded by nature and books, led him to commit to outreach and education. He is an active collegiate 4-H member leading his project, Bee Aware: Pollinator Protection, focused on raising awareness about Puerto Rican bees and other pollinators. He works at the Cooperative Extension Service in the Bair Soil Laboratory, where he creates educational material for the public and children and represents the Soil Sciences Program at open houses. He also assists at the Plant Disease Clinic, helping identify plant diseases, maintaining the pollinator garden, and engaging in outreach activities for farmers and the public. Additionally, he plays French horn in the university band. Through his work, he aims to contribute to public education about conserving natural resources and the crucial role ecosystems play for insects, other organisms, and agriculture. In his free time, he enjoys reading novels, essays, and poetry, listening to music, hiking, and spending time in nature.
