ReSea Collective
This blog post was written by Janssen Marie Gallenero, a 2025 Marine Plastics Ambassador.
The ReSea Collective originated from my interest in applying science and art to address environmental issues, specifically plastic pollution. I noticed that many polystyrene (#6) plastics were being improperly disposed of, specifically in my school, and ended up in landfills instead of being recycled. This inspired me to create a project that not only reduces plastic waste but also raises awareness about ocean conservation through creative reuse. The objectives of this project are to collect used polystyrene containers from schools and/or local establishments, upcycle them into artful accessories such as keychains and phone charms, and sell these products online to raise funds for ocean conservation organizations. In addition to product creation, the project aims to spread awareness online about the importance of plastic reuse and environmental stewardship. The project also involves organizing community clean-up events and drop-off initiatives to engage the public directly in sustainable practices. My inspiration for this project comes from witnessing the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and my desire to educate and empower others, particularly younger generations, to take action. With this project, it aligns with the Marine Plastics Ambassador program as it allows me to start-up a project related to reducing plastic pollution and art.
