EarthEcho International Welcomes New 2025 European Ocean Protection Ambassadors
Announcement coincides with Our Ocean Conference commitment
Washington, DC (April 29, 2025) - Today EarthEcho International announced the selection of six outstanding young ocean advocates as the 2025 European cohort of EarthEcho’s Ocean Protection Ambassadors Program. These passionate leaders, ages 17 to 22, will champion efforts to ban destructive bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) across the European Union (EU).
Launched through a commitment at this week’s Our Ocean Conference in Busan, South Korea, this announcement marks the beginning of a new collaboration between EarthEcho International and Oceans 5, a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. This program will mobilize the new Ambassadors to lead creative campaigns that drive public and political support to safeguard Europe’s ocean ecosystems.
“At a time when marine life is under more pressure than ever, young people are stepping up to lead the charge for real change,” said Philippe Cousteau Jr., Founder of EarthEcho International. “We’re thrilled to welcome this new group of European Ocean Protection Ambassadors and look forward to the bold advocacy they will bring to the protection of our ocean.”
The Ocean Protection Ambassadors Program is grounded in the global 30x30 conservation goal: protecting at least 30% of the ocean by 2030. While the EU has made strides toward this goal, many protected areas still allow harmful practices like bottom trawling, which destroys seafloor habitats and undermines ocean resilience.
Over the next year, the selected Ambassadors will design and lead grassroots campaigns, engage policymakers, and collaborate with leading NGOs to push for stronger marine protections and a full ban on bottom trawling within EU MPAs.
The 2025 EU Ocean Protection Ambassadors are:
- Adélaïde Landrie - France
- Alex Pujadas - Spain
- Antonia Spielvogel - Germany
- Kjeld Werther - Netherlands
- Ona Santisteban Uribarri - Spain
- Rocio San Felix - Spain
