Markus Martinez Burman

Markus Martinez Burman is an environmental scientist, educator and documentary photographer. Born and raised in Mexico to Mexican and Swedish families, Martinez has grown up with deep cultural values and a passion for exploration. His work explores the complexities of social connections to the environment and the struggles to protect it.

Having worked in a wide variety of ecological surveys as a research assistant in Costa Rica, eSwatini and Honduras. Martinez has made use of his camera to explore and document the natural and social struggles that surrounds him. Martinez passion for photography and storytelling has allowed him to perform as a lead and teaching assistant in three different National Geographic Photo Camps.

Martinez believes that education and youth have the power to change the world. His current work as a National Geographic Young Explorer with Indigenous Sustainable Development (INDIS), involves participatory storytelling and photography methods to aid youth from the Mokoxi Indigenous Nation of Lomerio, Bolivia, to reconnect and protect their forest home.
