Nickelodeon’s “Get Dirty Challenge”

Philippe Cousteau and EarthEcho International are proud to partner with Nickelodeon for the “Get Dirty Challenge.” Students ages 8-13 are challenged to create a short video showcasing how they “get dirty for a cause” to help the environment. Get involved and submit your own video at nick.com/get-dirty.
Our partners at Nickelodeon were eager to kick off the “Get Dirty Challenge” by recognizing the 5th grade students from Sunrise Elementary School who helped launch the World Water Monitoring Challenge. These students were treated to special invitations to the Kid’s Choice Awards for a night of celebration and inspiration. Joel Escobar, an Adviser at Sunrise Elementary reflected on the experience, saying:
“On Saturday March 28, 2015 sixty-five sixth graders and their teachers were granted the opportunity to attend the 2015 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award show. The students were able to witness pop culture at its best. Through this amazing and unforgettable experience Sunrise students learned to understand and appreciate different music and artistic genres.

The students personally heard Angelina Jolie’s message of hope to anyone who has ever felt out of place. Her message of feeling out of place for being too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, and or fitting in, I know inspired Sunrise students. In conclusion she left these students enthusiastic about being okay to be different!
An event such as this award allows educators to meet students where their interests lie. Allowing for this allows for better communication. It is my personal experience as an educator that makes me believe that effective teaching hinges upon 2-way communication between student and teacher. What better way to enter into these world then having students share their personal interests and passions? This event peeked our student’s interest for art and music through a media setting.
This event will help encourage Sunrise students to improve literacy and start conversations in which students defend their point of view if only to describe their favorite awards moment and why? Thank you Nickelodeon, EarthEcho, Experience L.A, L.A Partnership, Sunrise Principal, teachers and teacher assistants for the vision to support this educational and out of the box learning and life experience event for Sunrise students.”
