Warped Tour Eco Contest Adventure

10/11/07 VANS WARPED TOUR® Update

Alexandra, Philippe, and Mia are heading to Key West, FL, for the long-awaited Warped Tour Eco Contest adventure! We'll be meeting up with the winners — including VANS Warped Tour staff and crew, sponsors from Energizer and Truth, fans, and the band Big D and the Kids Table — for an eco-adventure trip that includes snorkeling, kayaking, and dolphin watching with staff from Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and MOTE Marine Laboratory. Jealous? Yeah, but don't worry — we'll share stories and videos here when we return from paradise.

On August 21, EarthEcho International will be getting dirty with the VANS WARPED TOUR® and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary as we clean up the water ways of Monterey Bay. Over 300 VANS WARPED TOUR® band members, crew, and production staff will split-up into eight groups for a major watershed clean-up effort.

Huge SHOUT OUTS to those in Monterey, CA, who have made this possible, especially the amazing team at Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary — Dawn Hayes (she rocks!), Liz Love, Rita Bunzel, and Bridget Hoover. And not to be forgotten: Bruce Delgado at the Bureau of Land Management, Amy Palkovic at California State Parks, Debbie Wyatt at Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, Laura Lee Lienk at California State University Monterey Bay’s Watershed Institute/Return of the Natives, the City of Salinas, the City of Monterey, Monterey Regional Stormwater & Education Alliance, and Save the Whales.

In other VANS WARPED TOUR®-related news, plans for the Eco Contest are well under way. As a reminder, the tour and EarthEcho International have implemented an Eco Contest to reward fans, bands, sponsors, and crew for taking aggressive eco-friendly action on the tour this summer. Winners of the Eco Contest will head out on a mini-expedition to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary this fall. The contest winners will get the aquatic eco-themed adventure of a lifetime with Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau during a three-day/two-night adventure trip where they’ll snorkel, kayak and dolphin-watch with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and MOTE Marine Laboratory staff and scientists offering a behind the scenes look into the amazing natural resources and hidden worlds of the Florida Keys. The trip will culminate with a party on the Key West waterfront.

TO ENTER, fans can stop by one of the participating booths onsite at the VANS WARPED TOUR and recycle 10 bottles or cans. They’ll then receive an entry form to complete and submit at the Warped Recycling tent. See official rules and more details at www.warpedtour.com. Maybe we’ll see you in the Keys!

The VANS WARPED TOUR® is well established as America's longest-running touring festival, breaking up-and-coming indie talent as well as showcasing established artists for the past 12 years. It has cemented its place in history by playing a major role in bringing punk-rock/skate/action sports culture from the underground to the forefront of American youth culture, while at the same time creating awareness and taking action on environmental causes and helping those in need.

EarthEcho International has been invited by Kevin Lyman and VANS WARPED TOUR® to work closely with their Warped Eco Initiatives (WEI) to develop environmentally-friendly programs that spur fans, bands, sponsors and crew to create awareness through positive actions on this summer's tour. VANS WARPED TOUR® has long been a leader in eco-friendly practices within the concert industry — last year, through the use of bio-diesel (diesel fuel made from plants), the solar sound system (run entirely on sunlight), reusable dishware, and the coordination of a significant tour-wide recycling operation assisted by thousands of volunteers, the production team reduced its use of petroleum fuel by nearly 20%, recycled 16,000 pounds of plastic, aluminum and cardboard, and reduced landfill waste by 100,000 pieces of disposable dishware. In other words, VANS WARPED TOUR® in 2006 reduced its carbon footprint by more than 600,000 lbs, which is the equivalent of not burning 30,000 gallons of gas! They're not bad for a few PUNKS!!

This summer VANS WARPED TOUR® and EarthEcho International are taking it a bit further by implementing the Eco Contest to reward fans, bands, sponsors and crew for taking eco-friendly action. The Eco Contest grand prize is a mini-expedition with EarthEcho where winners will have the opportunity to learn about our water planet by...well...getting wet.

The tour kicked off June 29 in Ponoma, CA. Check the tour dates page to find out when it's visiting your town. To enter the contest, stop by one of the participating booths and recycle 10 bottles — it's as simple as that. Participating sponsors include:
