Going Blue
Forthcoming from Free Spirit Publishing in summer 2010.

They surround us, they feed us, they are filled with myths and legends, they offer unparalleled beauty, and they are in trouble: Our oceans. All the waterways that run into them—rivers, ponds, seas, and lakes across the globe—are in trouble, too. In some locales, too much water causes flooding, exacerbated by soil erosion and climate change. Other places are parched by drought; inhabitants wonder where water will come from to sustain their bodies and their plants. Moreover, we have all seen the disasters caused by the fury of our oceans' storms. So...who cares?
Kids care. Youth across the globe are responding to our water crisis by transforming their ideas and energy into action. Kids are answering the call to help our environment by being green, and to rescue our oceans and waterways by going blue.
Going Blue: A Kids' Guide to Saving Our Oceans & Waterways, is a forthcoming publication from Free Spirit Publishing in summer 2010, created for ages 12 and up. This book is a partnership between EarthEcho International; author Cathryn Berger Kaye, an international leader in the field of service learning; and Free Spirit Publishing, whose mission is to help youth make a difference in the world. Their combined vision and expertise affords an exceptional opportunity to fuse knowledge about the oceans with the stimuli for action.
Going Blue seeks to inform youth about the issues surrounding our waters and provide the strategies and examples they need to see themselves as change agents. The book is divided among the five stages of service learning: investigation, preparation, action, reflection, and demonstration. With the aid of lively photos and illustrations, along with practical suggestions and activities, kids plan and do a meaningful service project that benefits the planet's water system.
