Sean Russell, Stow It-Don’t Throw It
Sean Russell is the Project Director for the Stow It-Don’t Throw It Project, a youth-driven marine debris prevention and ocean conservation initiative dedicated to protecting marine environments and their inhabitants. In 2012 alone, Stow It-Don’t Throw It assembled and distributed 2,565 personal-sized monofilament fishing line recycling containers, made from repurposed tennis ball containers, activating 550 youth volunteers in the process.

LA ‘Meatless Mondays’: Los Angeles City Council Endorses Healthier Eating Habits
From the City Council that declared war on trans-fats and fast-food restaurants comes the latest way to make residents feel, well, guilty about what they eat. The Los Angeles council, in a 14-0 vote on Friday, adopted a resolution urging residents to adopt a personal pledge to have a "meatless Monday." While it does not have the force of law and police will not be checking what you brought to work for lunch, city officials said they hope it will start a trend, make residents healthier and reduce the impact on the environment.

“The Big CleanUP” Recycling Contest is a Big Success
TerraCycle Founder and CEO, Tom Szaky, and environmental advocate and Co-Founder of EarthEcho International, Philippe Cousteau Jr., partnered in June to sponsor a summer-long challenge designed to engage youth in tackling the growing issue of ocean debris. The results were fantastic with an astounding 400,000+ pieces of packaging collected from 47 different participating schools and organizations.

Cutting Through a Sea of Excuses: Equipping Youth to Save the Ocean
When confronting the issue of ocean debris and pollution, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and find a quick excuse to focus on something else, anything else, other than the cold hard facts. It’s an understandable impulse because the problem isn’t pretty and it’s getting worse. The issue of plastic debris in the ocean is startling on its own. A United Nations study found that every square mile of the ocean has approximately 46,000 pieces of floating plastic in it.

Winner of American University’s Center for Environmental Filmmaking’s Eco-Comedy Video Announced
The Center for Environmental Film Making at American University recently announced the winner of its annual Eco-Comedy Video Competion. The center, headed by distignished film producer in residence Chris Palmer, annouced Alexander Lucas as the winner with his video "Clean Coal" by the Bituminous Marketing Company. The annual contest is open to anyone who prepares a short, funny video for YouTube, which communicates a clear message about clean energy and/or green jobs.
