In Indonesia anything goes. Thats right, in the afternoon the one runway of Sorong’s airport transforms into a playground where many local people hang out buy food and play soccer. Even though language was a barrier I felt I was able to befriend, (even if only briefly) many of the locals as we kicked the ball around until the sun set.

Wow!!!! This is one of the most majestic animals I have ever been fortunate to meet. For about an hour we swam underwater together. They would circle up and back around me time and time again. I am sure they were as curious of me as I of them. I can only imagine what they were thinking.

This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever traveled too. It was like a taste of heaven.

These majestic temples were spiritual and inspiring. It’s hard to believe that for centuries nature could conceal such beauty and that they were left undiscovered for hundreds of years.

These people traveled to parts of Cambodia in anticipation of a job and the opportunity to work in the rice fields. These temporary homes are made using plastic – all that they could afford for shelter from the blistering hot sun and evening tropical rain.

I will miss life above and below the islands of Mabul and Sipadan. Each day I went diving I experienced something new….and was constantly inspired. If you asked me to create unusual fish I would come up with a number of creative solutions. But it is mind boggling to me how many different and unusual fish there are, each specializing in their own way on how to eat other fish…while at the same time not being eaten. I could just stay there all day!!!!!!

One day something I can not explain happened to the color of the skies. I think there was a magical moment between rays of the sun and the clouds. For about thirty minutes the sky was illuminated by this magical orange and deep red color that I had never seen before.

An encounter with the Sea Gypsies

The other day I was invited to interview a family of sea gypsies. As I set out with my translator, I marvelled at what life must be like for them. I had romanced their story…in part the old man pictured above…reminded me of a wise old fisherman with many great tales to tell.

Sadly, after interviewing him, I realized how tough life is for him and how poor, uneducated and hungry they are. They are a people without a country who spend their lives with the sea in search of food each day. Given the challenges they face on a daily basis, they are happy for their story to be told.
