Any Sunday in New York City

On this sunny Sunday afternoon approximately five weeks prior to beginning my Fulbright Fellowship to Malaysia, I decided to walk along the Brooklyn Bridge until I found an unoccupied park bench. To my left is Manhattan, right is Brooklyn, in front is the Manhattan Bridge, behind in the distance is the statue of liberty, above is the clear blue sky and below is the East River where barely a fish could live.
As I sat there watching all the local New Yorkers and tourists walk, stroll, run, rollerblade and bike ride past me, I realized what New York means to me — crowds of people all participating in their own activity involved with their own life yet at the same-time sharing a common place and experience, the Brooklyn Bridge. As I spent the afternoon with the sun on my back, camera in hand and the crowds moving in both directions, I thought this is what I will miss — New Yorkers going about their daily lives.
Looking into the horizon, my thoughts are focused on remembering new moments of familiar settings and how my life will change, in a few short weeks. To me it is like imagining summer weather conditions when there is two feet of snow on the ground in the middle of winter.
Please join me over the next year as I begin to embark on a journey to create a documentary on Malaysia’s coral reefs. But first I thought I would post images that encompass my daily life in NYC. This online diary will document my process for creating a year long project in a remote location, taking into consideration traveling, planning, equipment, people, cultures and climate.
