Sean Russell, Stow It-Don’t Throw It
Sean Russell is the Project Director for the Stow It-Don’t Throw It Project, a youth-driven marine debris prevention and ocean conservation initiative dedicated to protecting marine environments and their inhabitants. In 2012 alone, Stow It-Don’t Throw It assembled and distributed 2,565 personal-sized monofilament fishing line recycling containers, made from repurposed tennis ball containers, activating 550 youth volunteers in the process.

“The Big CleanUP” Recycling Contest is a Big Success
TerraCycle Founder and CEO, Tom Szaky, and environmental advocate and Co-Founder of EarthEcho International, Philippe Cousteau Jr., partnered in June to sponsor a summer-long challenge designed to engage youth in tackling the growing issue of ocean debris. The results were fantastic with an astounding 400,000+ pieces of packaging collected from 47 different participating schools and organizations.

Cutting Through a Sea of Excuses: Equipping Youth to Save the Ocean
When confronting the issue of ocean debris and pollution, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and find a quick excuse to focus on something else, anything else, other than the cold hard facts. It’s an understandable impulse because the problem isn’t pretty and it’s getting worse. The issue of plastic debris in the ocean is startling on its own. A United Nations study found that every square mile of the ocean has approximately 46,000 pieces of floating plastic in it.

The Do Something Awards are now accepting applications for 2012
The Do Something Awards are now accepting applications for 2012. Do Something is a national nonprofit organization that inspires young people to believe that change is possible, and trains, funds, and mobilizes them to be leaders who measurably strengthen their communities. The Do Something Award identifies exceptional young social entrepreneurs, activists, and community leaders who have a significant social impact. Five nominees will receive a $10,000 community grant, participation in the Do Something Awards TV show, media coverage, and continued support from DoSomething.org. Of those five winners, one will be selected to win the Grand Prize and will receive a total of $100,000 towards his or her cause or organization. The application deadline is March 1, 2012.
