Robert Cox

Robert Cox is former President of the Sierra Club, author, and Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Environmental Communication and the Public Sphere (2010), and numerous articles on environmental and climate change communication, and strategic campaigns. He currently serves as Vice President of the Sierra Club for Mission/Strategy, where he advises the Club on long-term challenges and strategic implications for the organization.

Mr. Cox has helped to advise or lead campaigns for wilderness, public lands protection, energy policy, and other environmental concerns in the U.S. Congress for the past 30 years. He has served on the board of directors for the Sierra Club since 1993, and is on the advisory board for the Graduate Program in Environmental Humanities at the University of Utah, and the editorial board for Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and the Environment.

Mr. Cox is a longtime trekker in Asia, Africa, and the U.S. He is the co-founder of More Than Mountains, Inc., a non-profit trekking company in Nepal that aids educational and environmentally sustainability projects in Tamang villages in the Kavre District of that country.
