Paula Keener-Chavis is a Marine Biologist and the Director of Education Programs in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration. She has conducted extensive marine fisheries research off the Southeastern coast of the U.S. and research off Belize, Central America, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution. Ms. Keener-Chavis served on The President’s Panel on Ocean Exploration, the National Science Foundation’s Steering Committee for the Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) Workshop, and the COSEE Implementation Steering Committee. She also recently served as a member of the National Academies Committee on Exploration of the Seas. Ms. Keener-Chavis is a past president of the National Marine Educators Association (2000-2001) and is Chair of the National Marine Educators Association’s Conference Committee. She serves on the NOAA Education Council, and on the National Science and Technology Council Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee on Human Capacity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
